Rent Leveling

The office of Rent Leveling administers and enforces the Rent Leveling Ordinance Chapter 381-4 of the City of Paterson Municipal Code.  It is also committed to working with both property owners and tenants to resolve all matters pertaining to the Rent Leveling Ordinance.

THE PURPOSE OF THE RENT LEVELING OFFICE IS TO: 

•    Process & remedy Illegal increases complaints.
•    Process & remedy Maintenance decrease complaints
•    Supply information and assistance to landlords and tenants. 
•    Serve as a mediator in tenant/landlord disputes. 
•    Assist property owners in complying with Rent Leveling rules/regulations.
•    Provide referrals for rental & legal assistance.  

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: 

•    Property owners are required to submit an annual Property Registration Form.  There is no fee for this form but must be submitted within 30 days once obtained. 
•    New Construction: In order to be exempted from Chapter 381 it is required to request exemption in writing 30 days prior to the issuance of the Certificate of Occupancy from the City of Paterson’s construction official otherwise property WILL NOT BE EXEMPT. 
•    Rent leveling board meetings are held bi-monthly.
