Passaic Valley Water Commission Advances Repairs on Complex Main Break – Pressure Rising in Some Paterson Neighborhoods – Boil Water Advisory Remains in Effect
(Paterson, N.J. – August 13, 2025) – Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC) continues to make progress in repairing the large water main break near Hinchliffe Stadium. After more than 20 feet of excavation, the leak is contained, and system pressure is starting to rise in some areas. The boil water advisory for Paterson and Prospect Park remains in effect until water quality testing confirms it is safe to drink.
Yesterday, work was temporarily paused due to safety concerns when the excavation reached a depth that posed risks to crews. A new safety plan was developed, and work has since resumed. Crews are replacing sections of both 24-inch and 30-inch pipelines, which involves extensive welding. The goal is to have at least one of these pipelines recharged and delivering water by tomorrow.
In addition, PVWC is actively pumping water into the Hillcrest section of Paterson, where residents have begun reporting increased pressure and partial restoration of service. Crews have also started filling the Granite Avenue Tank. Early results are promising, with some residents at the top of Redwood Avenue, near Katz Avenue, beginning to see water return on the lower levels of their homes.
