OVERLOOK PARK ALLIED TEXTILES MILLS RIVERWALK PROJECT
Several years ago, the City of
Paterson undertook planning for a river walk to provide leisure and access from
the base of the waterfall at Overlook Park to the West Broadway Bridge. Construction of the river walk is both more
interesting and somewhat simplified by the presence of a historic brownstone
wall along the river bank that was once part of the industrial textile dyeing
complexes situated there some 150 years ago.
The walkway is planned to run along the historic wall well above the
river level to afford great views and protection from flooding. Phase One of the river walk project involves
the rehabilitation and stabilization of the historic wall upon which the
walkway can be constructed in Phase Two.
Planning, environmental review and funding for this project is now
complete and construction will begin in spring 2014. This City of Paterson project, funded through
state and county open space programs, will be the second improvement following
Mary Ellen Kramer Park in the Great Falls national Historic Park area since
2011.
