The Paterson Division of Health serves residents of Passaic County, primarily those in Paterson, Hawthorne, Haledon, North Haledon, Prospect Park, West Paterson, and Totowa.

The first Paterson "Board of Health" was established in 1862 after a bad Cholera epidemic.  The population of the City of Paterson at that time was 9,000.  The epidemic killed one hundred and forty residents making it necessary to create a Board of Health to address the health needs of Paterson's residents.
